When the majority of the population could not read, UK coins had no
denomination at all, and the value was known by the size of them.
When I visit an overseas country, I learn very quickly what the
numbers are in their language, so I do not think it is a
great problem for visitors to England.
Numerals would not have gone well with these designs.
