Do you know what alloy the blade is made from?

You're right there's a strong chance that you will ruin a temper with a 
grinder.

It will be hard work even with a sen, ever tried to file a file, with a 
file?

Borrow Wayne Goddards $50 knife shop 2nd edition.  There are some tips 
for making a knife vice cheap :-)
