Coming late in this thread...
There is time to be gained in a post office, however, when you
hand-precancel in advance (during quiet hours), and don't have to
cancel during rush hours.
And time is money.
Another possible reason, but I really doubt it, would be to precancel
with a triangle instead of a date stamp, that would avoid showing
people the delay in processing the postage due letters.
