REVIEW: DW G1 #5: Original Sin

by decepticoncommand@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Enfilade) Aug 28, 2004 at 11:33 PM

Bumblebee is questioning his leader****p ability more than ever.=20
Starscream is MIA ,having deactivated Ratchet and some other Autobots.
Sunstorm's on the loose, after bringing down Omega Supreme.

Jetfire reveals that he and Omega were part of Operation: containment
(from Micromasters #1, Countdown's mission). They left the operation
since they believed they should focus on finding Prime and the Ark
moreso than on containing Decepticon expansion. They tracked a
signature to Earth, thinking it was the Ark, later discovering it was
a large Decepticon-like signature. They were attacked (by
Scourge--who is seen in War and Peace--how Scourge works into the
storyline is yet unknown). They overcame him but were trapped on
Earth and deactivated.

Cliffjumper is left to babysit the still-alive Omega Supreme while
Bumblebee and Jetfire head out.

On Cybertron, Preceptor tells prowl that Vector Sigma's core
consciousness was uploaded to the computer that created the clones'
mental development. To manage the information in Vector Sigma, the
clone would have had to alter and simplify it just to remain
sane...some of VS's info might be coded right into the clone's
personality. Also, Shockwave only became interested in Earth after
decoding info from VS (in War and Peace).

Over the gulf of Alaska, Bumblebee wonders if Sunstorm is "for real"
with his visions etc....and sees a "hole in the ocean", where all the
water is pouring downwards. At the bottom is a seal....and Starscream
and Sunstorm. The seal is marked with the joint Autobot/Decepticon
logo. Sunstorm wants STarscream to open it because Starscream is "th
eonly one with an untainted ****tion of his being
left....Megatron...your--" He is cut off by the Autobots' arrival,
btu tells Starscream to ignore them and open the seal.

Starscream touches it. Black energy explodes out. Jetfire with
Bumblebee aboard dives into the hole, where weird circuits line the
walls of a huge cavern. Starscream attacks! As Jetfire subdues him,
he notices Bumblebee in Sunstorm's grip and a massive pool of liquid
on a huge pillar rising up from the cavern floor. There is a drop,
who knows how deep, around the pillar and the TFs are on the lip of
the pool. Surprisingly, Starscream attacks Sunstorm, having never
trusted him, and having modified his null ray enough to affect him.=20
But Starscream also attacks Jetfire, and is on the verge of offing
Bumblebee when Bumblebee warns him about Sunstorm behind him!=20
Starscream blasts him, kicking him over the edge, unable to resist the
challenge of destroying the so called indestructable. He also felt
that treachery was the only way for HIM to get out of this one alive.

***

I've been skipping the "Review" part lately. So here goes...rereading
these I can see the threads of continuity more clearly. I just wish
sometimes the STORY was more clear. Why does Shockwave interested in
Earth? What exactly is the link between Sunstorm and Vector Sigma?=20
How the frag did Scourge end up on Earth? Sometimes it's hard for me
to tell what's going on. Mystery is good ,but readers should be able
to TELL when hints or answers are being revealed. The art is
beautiful but the visual storytelling could perhaps be improved.

Another thing is that "chase Sunstorm" is getting old. Fast. I wish
they'd worked something ELSE in here and then come BACK to "chase
Sunstorm."
