Hopefully someone can help. My father used to collect military
patches and insignia (among other things); unfortunately his
collections got wiped out with the house in Hurricane Katrina, but he
managed to salvage some bits and pieces, which have been in storage
for the past few years. Even more unfortunately, he died last year,
and I have recently come into possession of these remnants of his.
Many of the patches are dirty, some still caked with dirt and debris,
some have rust stains; a lot of the insignia and medals also are
corroded. I don't really have any idea of what the specific patches
are, and I know he was pretty bummed that the bulk of his most
treasured items were never recovered. I have also inherited a large
number of books on military insignia, so I imagine I can look a lot of
them up, but they seem to range in age from WW2 to modern, including
US, British, French, and Russian items, Army and Air Force. I was
wondering if anyone had any advice on the best way to clean the
patches in particular, but any advice on the medals and pins is also
appreciated. Warm soapy water? Laundry detergent? Dry cleaning?
Many thanks in advance for any assistance.
