Psychomania
1971
Horror/Zombie/Biker movie on VHS
Director: Don Sharp
Starring: George Sanders (in his last screen appearance)
Linda Gray, Nicky Henson, Mary Larkin, Beryl Reid
George Sanders' final screen appearance.
Look out! The Living Dead motorcycle gang is on the rampage, wreaking
havoc in their small English town. For gang leader Tom, however, mere
earthly violence is not enough: he's obsessed with the occult and is
convinced that he can kill himself and then return from the dead--with
the help of a frog-wor****pping cult and his seance-conducting mother
(Beryl Reid). Remarkably, Tom succeeds and soon joins the ranks of the
walking--and riding--dead! Now if he can only persuade his girlfriend
and the rest of his gang to join him, but Mother and her diabolical
butler Shadwell (George Sanders) may have other plans for the Living
Dead, who are dangerously trespassing on uncharted spiritual grounds.
"Psychomania" is a pre-punk, British horror cult classic featuring
trashy violence, suburban witchcraft and some amazing motorcycle stunt
sequences. Come and ride with The Living Dead--if you dare!
The leader of a biker gang is sure that he can kill himself and come
back from the other side. All he needs is a little help from "a frog-
wor****pping cult and his seance-conducting mother." He also aims to
get the rest of his gang to join him as part of the living dead.
Filmed in 1971 and released in the U.S. three years later as "The
Death Wheelers," this offbeat English chiller stars George Sanders and
Beryl Reid as parents who make a pact with a mysterious frog-
wor****pping cult to resurrect their dead biker son. Once the leather-
clad zombie rides his bike out of his grave, he urges his old gang to
kill themselves so they can join him in "immortality." Nicky Henson,
Patrick Holt also star. 88 min. Somewhere in the English countryside a
nihilistic biker (Nicky Henson) decides to make the name of his
violent motorcycle gang ("The Living Dead") more than just a slogan.
With the help of his dear old mum (Beryl Reid), who just happens to be
a frog-wor****pping occultist, he dives to his death only to leap out
of his grave (still astride his motorcycle) like a black leather bat
out of hell. This is one young rebel who makes the dictum "Live hard,
die young, and leave a good-looking corpse" a reality. Soon he's
recruiting for his undead biker army. ("Oh man, what are we waiting
for?!" exclaims a restless gang member before driving headlong into a
truck.)
An annoying devil-wor****pping British biker gang calling themselves
"The Living Dead" decide to take their moniker to heart when their
leader commits suicide and is brought back from the dead in an occult
ritual (thanks to a Satanic pact made by pop George Sanders), roaring
out of the grave on his hellish hog. Realizing that becoming zombies
could be even more fun than the usual day-to-day hell-raising, most of
the gang follow suit -- throwing themselves off buildings, into
traffic, walls, etc. Without the annoyance of death to contend with,
the Living Dead become even more obnoxious than usual, leading to a
pat solution from their leader's peeved mother (Beryl Reid).
Outrageously dated and featuring loads of unintentional laughs, this
is still the finest movie ever made about British zombie biker gangs
and features the stately Reid turning into a giant frog.
